The down hair of the Hircus goat, originally from Kashmir, provides the precious cashmere fiber. Nowadays, the most precious goats are bred in the Himalayas and in the Asian mountain valleys (China, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Iran). In order to survive the cold temperatures, these animals have developed a down-hair from which cashmere is obtained, whose main characteristics are the high thermal insulation, softness, preciousness and lightness.
The cashmere production involves 5 stages: collection, sorting, shearing, spinning and weaving.
The collection takes place in spring and it is done manually at the moment of the natural mutation of the hair (the animal does not suffer). The sorting and the classification of the hair are still done manually. After dividing the fiber according to its characteristics, it is washed to remove dirt and any other material remaining from the collection. It is only after this stage that the fiber is ready to be converted into yarn.
